Carl David's Story
Life
I have lived in Atlanta since 1984 where I play piccolo for the Atlanta Symphony after having played in the New Orleans Symphony for one year ('81-'82) and the Florida Orchestra in Tampa (1970-1984), where I served as 2nd, then as piccoloist for several years and finally as principal flutist for my last six years there. I have also played in the Santa Fe Opera and the Grand Teton Music Festival. For two summers ('75 & '76) I toured with the American Wind Symphony of Pittsburgh.
I graduated from the USF in '77, where I began my association with the Florida Orchestra as a student, playing second flute to my teacher Martha Rearick. In the early '70s I participated in the Blossom Festival School of the Cleveland Orchestra at Kent State University and at the Institute for Advanced Musical Studies near Montreux, Switzerland). In addition, I participated in master classes with Marcel Moyse (Brattleboro, Vermont - former professor from the Paris Conservatory), Geoffrey Gilbert (flut...Expand for more
ist for Sir Thomas Beecham, who later taught at Stetson), Julius Baker (then principal flutist of the New York Philharmonic), William Bennett and Peter Lloyd (co-principals of the London Symphony), and Jean-Pierre Rampal (famous flute soloist). I also studied privately with Thomas Nyfenger (professor at Yale), Maurice Sharp (professor at the Cleveland Institute of Music & principal with the Cleveland Orch.), Maxence Larrieu (principal flutist of the Paris Opera)and Shaul Ben-Meir (flutist with the Detroit Symphony).
I have been an Artist Affiliate at Emory University since 1986, having previously taught at the University of Central Florida (Orlando) and the University of Tampa. Several of my Emory recitals have been broadcast on National Public RadioÂs ÂPerformance Today.Â
A roller-coaster aficionado (having ridden nearly 200 different coasters), I continue the nearly constant renovations of my 1915 house, which I share with my partner and two long-coat chihuahuas, Didi & Rex.
